The National Retail Federation (NRF) forecasts that Americans will spend over $9 billion on the haunted holiday in 2018. According to the NRF, more than 175 million Americans will participate in the “holiday,” with average personal spending trending up to $83.79.

The Fourth of July is that special day of the year when we celebrate our Freedom of Choice. This year July 4 falls on a Wednesday, and that makes it really special. When Independence Day is on the weekend, the boss grudgingly grants a Friday or a Monday off.

The holiday is celebrated on the first Friday after Father’s Day. On first reaction, such a celebration would seem to be an entirely frivolous event, founded for no particular reason.

National Jerky Day will be observed this coming Tuesday, June 12. Jerky lovers from around the USA are starting to take notice of the holiday and celebrate by, what else, eating more jerky.  The holiday was originally suggested a few years back by one of the major jerky manufacturers. The revenues for the jerky industry have steadily increased in each of the years since the first National Jerky Day, according to industry research giant IBISWorld.

Armed Forces Day is observed yearly on the third Saturday in May. Memorial Day honors those who have given their lives and Veteran’s Day all who have served. Armed Forces Day pays tribute to the four branches of the military and those currently serving in uniform. In 1949 the Defense Department unified the separately celebrated Army, Navy and Air Force Days into one observance. The Marine Corps has joined in the single observance, although the Corps still has its own day set aside.

Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday, May 13. Then she will put the roses in a vase, maybe splash on a little perfume, call the day spa to schedule a manicure, and look up a new pancake batter recipe to try out the updated Kitchen Aid mixer. The one she got for Mother’s Day ten years ago.

Cinco de Mayo, or the Fifth of May, is one of Mexico’s major national holidays, comparable to Memorial Day in the United States. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated to mark the proclamation of separation from Spain on September 16, 1810. The history of Cinco de Mayo is a little more complicated. The date marks the victory of the Mexican army over the French on May 5, 1862. What were the Mexicans doing fighting the French?

The National Day Calendar website www.nationaldaycalendar.com lists over 1,500 designated days, weeks and months. Fortunately, these are mostly unofficial and are not associated with a day off from work. The ancient Romans had as many as 180 holidays, and citizens did tend to send it in and spend the day at the circus or the baths. No wonder the Roman Empire declined and fell. Too bad for the Romans, good luck for the Barbarians!

Sunday, April 22 marks the 48th anniversary of the founding of Earth Day in 1970 by US senator Gaylord Nelson. The first Earth Day was celebrated by over 20 million Americans across the country. The popular demonstrations associated with Earth Day moved the issue of environmental protection to the front of the national agenda. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created by Congress in December of 1970, with the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts soon to follow.

The tax filing deadline this year is Tuesday, April 17. If you haven’t filed, or owe money to the government, stop reading this blog and get busy. For those of you who filed early or on time and expect a refund, read on. Checks are already in the mail from Uncle Sam, with state refunds soon to follow.

Spring is here and it’s time to get out of the house and live again. Up north, the winter sports season is winding down. Hardcore snowmobilers and cross-country skiers are still heading out to the few remaining open trails. The rest of us are heading out to the mall, or just sitting home, breathing a sigh of relief that we got through the winter without suffering frostbite.
